The Setting of Shelterville

Post by Hogan »

The town of Shelterville is a small sleepy town in the backwater Wild West in the year of 1883.
The town is home to about 180 living souls who are busy making a living in whatever job they have, some working in the mines of the nearby mountains.
The central place in the town is the saloon, the Silver Pen, a place of song, drinking and dance. It is rumored that a special event of entertainment will take place here someday soon, but nobody knows of that for sure.
Besides the saloon, the town has the Sheriffs office and prison, though the Sheriff is out of town these days to look for some wanted criminals reported nearby. The newly appointed deputy sees to town-safety meanwhile. Carpenter, Undertaker, General Store and the private homes of citizens also make up the town.
About a hundred yards outside the town we find the town’s small church and nearby cemetary below the hangman’s hill. The latter is said to be haunted by the ghosts of wrongfully accused horsethieves...

This is a short overview of which facilities are at hand for partying, feel free to make use of them as you see fit! Should any artist settle for the roles of some of the town’s inhabitants for their own characters, please give it up for discussion here!

Should there be an asking for new facilities, they can become canon for the occasion should they fit the setting!

Any questions to the city, its facilities and vicinity can be asked in this thread!

That... was actually a pretty good question/suggestion... I'll see if I can dig out the old maps of the area tonight and dust them off for scanning

Well, the haunting is in fact a hoax made by the Scoleri Brothers to scare away people while they dig for the 100.000$ in gold a third brother of theirs buried in one of the graves, right before he was hanged for... horsethieving... unfortunately he didn't tell them which grave it was.
One of the brothers tends to the digging while the other play the ghost that scares latenight visitors away... which has so far been few, but reports from those who did come by has so far been enough to keep the rest of the inhabitants away from the cementary after the sun has set.

Strangely enough, nobody has of yet noriced the digging in the graves, and even more strangely is perhaps the fact that deep under the cementary lies an ancient indian burial cave (out of the usual for Indians, but these were not ordinary indians). So far the spirits dwelling here has onle become a little restless due to the activities of the town, but this might not be so for long... :?

The deputy of the town is Hank McMillian, a young fellow who wants to do good and keep order, but finds it extremely diffcult as he is friend to everybody in town, and taking a stand between friends makes him unconfortable... now, for outsiders! :P

Maps over the town and surrounding area will soon be available!
... I hope...

Scooby doo!

Post by Wheels »

Is scooby and the gang coming? :) Reason I need the deputy, Is I need him to be the first townie to see the kids. I have a gag lined up for that meeting. I have no firm Idea yet of how the kids will interact with the ghosts. Maybe a scooby doo spoof using some of the cameo folk to bust the Brothers scam? eh. You know let one character be Thelma and some one elses be Dafny. I volunteer Stewart for Scooby!
For anyone who needs to know the Kids will be arriving in town via a defective library portal. They will crash throught the roof of the Dry Goods / General store.

A map is good, but what would be really awesome is if we had some cooperative imagery to draw from... ie, the layout of the salloon and graveyard for example. Or, the "now entering shelterville" sign (maybe with the population posted on it) would be GREAT to see beforehand, so that if more than one artist chooses to draw such a sign, the different comics' signs will match eachother. It will add coolness to the crossover factor.

Anyone else agree?

Any chance of sketches/drawings of some of the more prominent citizens (i.e. the Deputy, Carpenter, Undertaker, General Store manager, Barkeep), as there's a chance that they might appear in more than one comic?

I've promised to bring up a sketch of the saloon as well as a map of the town, surrounding area and graveyard (of which I got the graveyeard sketched down).
While I should be able to do the maps, lack of artistic ability as well of a scanner, is putting some limitations on the drawings, so... anyone interested in providinngs their suggestions? :)

Speak up if you have a building you would like to sketch and designm and I'll give you some specifications i know it includes, besides that its free game, though taking the WW-style into consideration!

Ooh! Ooh! I wanna' draw the undertaker!!! (And his office too, I s'pose.)

Something that should really be done is the brothers that are digging up the graveyard... since there's at least a decent chance that they'll appear in someone's comic.

I agree with feyd.

I think another thread established that a character from pr0ncrest has an 'ancestor' who is the bartender at the saloon. I think this means that the pr0ncrest artist is going to provide images of the bartender, no?

You're on!

The Undertaker is Mr. Moe T. Arity, who has his office in the other end of town as opposed to the church (sounds illogical, but it makes for a nice show when the wagon takes the coffin through the mainstreet to the cementery.

The Office itself is a small building with an exhibition area in the front, an office in the back and a small chapel along the site with double doors opening into the exhibition area and another one out to the alley, right next to the stable where Moe keeps his wagon and black stallions.
Right next to the stable is a small carpentry where Moe makes the coffins himself.

Moe is helped my a small hunchbacked Indian mongrel named Humanniken, outcast from a nearby tribe, who besides tending to the daily errands, is a master with wood and tends to do the last finishings on the coffins.

Moe lives in a small house a little away from the office while Humani sleeps in the stables. None of them has much to do with the other inhabitants of the town, and are avoided in turn unless there's a need for their services.

Lots of rumor circulate about Moe, but that is nothing compared to the number of rumors there's around concerning Humani, at the Sheriff has at least on two occasions had to stop a drunken mob from hanging and quartering the little man.

Anyone else takers for some of Shelterville's inhabitants or buildings?

Will there be any pictures or Photographs of some of the builds and backgrounds. SO we all draw similar backgrounds?

Only if someone wants to take a shot at providing a picture or drawing, like Feyd "voluntered" for the undertaker. :)

It could be interesting to create the town from a joint-project where everybody draws a piece or character until we have the whole set! 8)

And I WILL come up with the promised maps!! :?
