what kind of printer / funding ?

Post by gnume »

wholesale : central cheaper printing of minimum number of calenders. but some one will need to manage the store and the pre orders for founding. and it will give more donation for the project if we sell at the same price

print on demand : printed for the buyer when he makes the order. no need of community involvement in the sales. less donation for the project if we sell at the same price because higher printing rates

please comment with your choice as well
so we know who chose what

With wholesale we would need to come up with funding in advance, either from our own pockets or through fundraising (Kickstarter was mentioned). Also we could end up with a stockpile of unsellable calenders if push come to show...
Also, we need one person to stock the merchandise and handle the sendouts...
On the positive side... this have a chance of netting a better income meaning more money for the foundation...

As for the print on demand (as with Cafepress), the drawback is that the surplus on each item will be less, meaning we will have to sell a larger number than with the Wholesale idea to earn the same.
The plus side is that we don't have to put up money in front and don't stand to loose any should the project fail, we don't have to do much once the item has been set up, short of advertising for it as well as buying it to our friends and loves ones :D

Its a decision that has to be made now as it will have influence on the whole project...

I'm all for print on demand myself. No chance of anyone losing money.

kaje votes nutral. i vote for on demand print
even if we did pospone this until late next year, we have no way of knowing how successful we'll be on a first run
i vote to save wholesale until we can prove we can do it. with a sucess under our belts we'd be able to more agressivly market it. at that point we can take the kickstart route, do the wholesale production line and rely more on the real reason things sell, word of mouth.

i'll make the rounds of the other participants tonight when i have a shot at getting it done :D

Well put Jim, you got to crawl before you walk, and doing it safe the first time will give us a general idea of what we are able to do in the future...

Lets hear the other opinions... :)

Cafe Press specializes in this sort of thing. No initial investment, on demand printing. I say set up your account at CafePress.com and contact me if you need any prepress needs whatsoever. That's been my specialty for almost 20 years.

Definately print on demand. I have no cash whatever for printing costs. Couldn't do it any other way.

Looks like the artists have given their vote on demand... :)

Time to move on to decide on layout, length and run of the calender me think...

If you can raise the funds using Kickstarter, or some other outfit, you could probably have a little more control over the selling price, and therefore the amount given to charity. The downside is finding someone willing to store the printed calendars, and handle the work, and expense of mailing the calendars. The simplest way to handle the project would be print on demand. Has anyone approached Ka-Blam or any other source with the proposal of a reduced rate on the job? They might do it if they know the proceeds go to cancer research. Just a thought.

The only Print-on-demand place I can think of to suggest is: http://www.Ka-blam.com

Any others you can think of?
