Halloween Cameo Caper 2008 - Where shall it be?

Post by Hogan »

It's 2008, a new year dawning and time to start thinking about a new year's Cameo Caper!

Continuing the tradition from 2006 and 2007, we once again try or hands at getting a multi-comic cameo caper running on Halloween Eve as well as the days around it, hopefully creating one major comic-arc for the fun and entertainment of everybody!

The Halloween Cameo Caper of 2006 was, to all accounts, a success, and the 2007 edition turned out pretty well, despite the drought that affected a host of artist who's skills and time had been almost drained during the extended run of the Crossover Wars.
We promised, that this year there will be no Crossover Wars, leaving artists free and fit to participate in the Cameo Caper in force... if they choose to!

But, to get down to the specifics of this thread... the Halloween Cameo Caper is an event centered on the 31th of October where characters from all interested comics (no kind or hosts bared) are invited to one hell of a party in a place this thread will help to decide. The original concept is still like it was in the previous years, at the date of Halloween (or the day closest to, taking updates schedules into accounting), all the participants post a strip (canon, none-canon, filler etc.) on their site or here in the forum, showing their characters and as many characters from other comics as possible, having fun and celebratinf the event!

BUT... nothing can prevent any participant from setting up whole storylines centered on the event, and nothing can prevent the participating comics from joining up in crossovers with other comics for the sake of the event like it has been done before! Actually... its totally recommended!

So far you don't have to sign up for anything, first we have to decide where to host the Caper of 2008!
The first year the Caper went to the town of Shelterville in the old Wild West, and last year it visited Disneyland orbiting a faraway planet in the near future... where shall it go this year? Its up to you!

The following is a suggested list of unused options taken from the previous year's poll for a place to host the party.

Under the Sea
Ancient China
Earth’s Core
Shopping Mall (with zombies?)
The Middle Ages
Haunted Castle

But... anyone else who has a fantastic idea about where to host the Cameo Caper of 2008? This thread is for suggestions and discussions, and you don't have to even think about signing up for the Cameo Caper just yet, just feel free to take part in the discussion!

The discussion will come to an end at the 17th of February, after which a poll will be set up, featuring the hot topics of the thread, for everyone to vote on the final result... but more on that later.

When the setting has been chosen, a more detailed campaign for the exact location will be provided... so therefore DO come up with various ideas while suggesting and voting... everything helps to make the setting as memorable as the previous ones!

Do NOT sign up for anything yet! Wait until the setting has been chosen and described, then you can sign up like crazy!

- Hogan & Tinkerbell

EDIT of 18.02.2008

The time for suggesting places to hold the Cameo Caper 2008 is now up, and a poll has been put together with the most popular suggestions (and a couple added by yours sincerely since not enough new spots were suggested...).

The Poll will run until the end of March, after which the winning choice will be chosen and a setting build up from the basic idea, and THEN the signing up and planning can begin!!

On your mark... get set... vote!!

... oh, and for those who do not want to sign up in the forum in order to vote, its possible to "mail-vote" by mailing your choice to your's sincerely.
Also, the options for voting is for everyone, no matter if you consider participating or not...

That's certainly the best option on display imo; the good thing about a shopping mall (even one with zombies) is that it can be inserted into comics with no fantasy elements. I think last year the fact that our location wasn't just in space but also in the future was a put-off to a bunch of people.

Plus, shopping mall + zombies = winnar.

I think be able to plan for it.. and it might even be better accepted amongst my readers... still I'll have to wait until mayber september before committing to actual crossover ideas... regardless what the final theme is.

The cool thing about a shopping mall with zombies is that I can get Deccy,Aggie and Aura involved from the prologue of EOU this time.... which.. if we get a dog and another male character.. we can pull a Scooby Do homage.

Deccy just has to be Shaggy! I wanna be Velma.. and Aura can be Daphne... now... hmm.... who can we borrow for Fred? oh I know... Hogan would be a funny Fred. He's already a dumb blond.

*snicker snicker*
bad cliche comedy at it's worst

Now I got an idea that is out side the suggestions. Why not have Cat scratch or catspaw whatever the hell his name is or a leftover droid or someone like it finds the Web comics gyro and steals it in revenge for Editor. Then we spend the x-over in a Salvador Daliesk world in which the rules have been turned off trying to restore order to the webverse.

Hogan would indeed be a funny Fred.... *flees*

*returns*

Wheels, while your idea is interesting, I'd like to reiterate my concern about keeping this accessible to comics that don't want to invest too heavily in the fantasy malarkey (okay, I realise that the zombies would detract from any realism a little, but there's a difference between a few shambling grotesqueries - which could be written off as some sort of plague or hallucination, or even just dodged altogether, so that characters only ever meet non-zombies shouting about zombies etc. - and throwing out all the rules of physics and metaphysics. It's an idea I'd like to pursue (Crossover Wars II, anyone? Okay, maybe not anytime soon.... 2010?), but possibly not in an open-invite event like this, since it's tantamount to closing the invite to a few hundred or even thousand comics.

*convulses*

I *really* don't think that we should re approach anything "Crossover Wars"... no offense, but I don't think I'm the only one burned out and bored of them.... not just as a creator, but as a reader too.

no offense, but I think it needs maybe 2 years before revisiting another crossover event related to the Crossover Wars... at LEAST two years.

my personal opinion, at no intended offense at anyone.

Don't worry, I wasn't being entirely serious. I realise how hard some of you worked to get CW1 finished.

If I can get off my ass and start my comic going again, I can easily plan a reason for my gang to be at a mall in PSI. I can more easily weave it into a story in which won't piss off readers or burn me out.

I know that I would be interested in doing a number of Cameos since a Mall Setting would be easy to meet random people/characters. Any crossovers, direct crossovers, that I would do would be MUCH shorter stints so I would not burn my self out into a mess again... perhaps nothing longer than one week or ranging from 2-10 combined strips (1-5 strips each)

I don't know if KAM is reading this thread, but if you are interested, this might be a decent reason to get my guys and Gertrude and Brunhilda together again for something.

If not, perhaps we can set up a different, separate crossover some other time.

Actually, if elect to do "The Middle Ages" or "Haunted Castle", I'd still be able to work out something semi-plausible for PSI methinks. "Middle Ages" may be a tad more complicated for me though.

well, 13 more days. I hope some more people respond to this thread soon!

Once I get a loose site up... within the next couple of days, I'll tour the forums, telling about the event, hopefully getting more people to voice their opinions here and perhaps, in the end, participate :)

So you want the meeting to happen at the Halloween Caper?

I have been thinking about that storyline I mentioned (I think in the secret forum). I was thinking about doing it next, but there were some holes in the story, although Halloween might be far enough away to fix those & my storyline could explain zombies running around... & I was considering asking some other webcomics to come in for the ending... hmmmm...

Well, I'm trying to keep my crossovers more story-logical from now on... somewhat...

The sorta-plan I have for PSI and KAMics would be to either get Kerr's Whip back... or at least the purple jewel (source of it's extra powers) from the end of said whip.

This crossover idea (if you are keen on approaching it) would only work during the Cameo Caper if it is decided to be in the Mall or in the Haunted Castle.

I think the shopping mall sounds the most usable option... Though I'm a freak and actually casting my vote for the Earth's Core... Assuming Steve's back in his rightful time by then

Oh, God, I can't think of the Earth's core without thinking of that dreadful movie... (not that I ever saw it, mind, but the mere concept of a journey to the Earth's core protected by anything less than all the power of the archmages and angels fills me with rage...)

Count me in, by the way - even if there won't be many regular ROCR updates between now and October.

Not even all the strips for the first Cross-over Wars are officially in, yet.

I say go with a forumverse since it would allow for the smoothist of cross-overs with breaking as little rules from each respective place as possible.

The mall definitely seems to me like it'd be the most fun.

Hi!, first post.
I'd like to join, if I have time by the time of Halloween.
So here's my opinion:
I think the haunted Castle is easier and less restrictive, but a mall with zombies like in "Dawn of the dead" sounds fun too.
