Chapter 10: Misplaced (the new 'today's page' thread)

Possibly the oddest fantasy epic ever written. Magic vodka, Aliens, Cannibal Coffee Ninjas, Little Yellow Idol, not to mention Mysterious Cloak Guy (you can call him 'Mickey' for short... but only on a good day)

Chapter 10: Misplaced (the new 'today's page' thread)

Post by Tinkerbell »

Right, new chapter, new thread (as if the old thread was getting long enough to be worth cutting...).

Yes, it's a LOST parody. But I promise I'll do more jokes than just the 'omg! polar bear!' one. A word of warning before we go in; I'm doing that thing of parodying/referencing things I've not seen myself again, so if I muss things up that's why. Special thanks to my sister, a long-standing LOST fan, for her help in constructing the chapter and sorting out a few gags, and also to my mum for giving me the idea in the first place.

As to the title page, I'm chuffed with it; it worked really well considering how quickly I drew it. Interesting fact: the mop-top palm trees were drawn with the same style/process that I use to draw bad manga emo fringes...

Also, if you know anywhere that links to me, can you tell me so that I can ask them to update their links, please? ta

09/07/2007: 'Speaking too soon...'

So, new chapter, new sketchbook, a few other changes to my set-up (I'm currently using 4H 0.3mm leads for my primary pencil; before this page I was using 2H. The 4H looks great on paper; a really smooth finish, but it doesn't seem to have scanned very well - stupid cheapass scanner).

- Mike seems to be pretty cranky, huh? I'm really pleased with the way the poses and expressions in panel one, though Brian looks a bit airy-fairy with that penguin pose...

- I wonder whose finger is on the button? I make no apologies for the STOP acronym gag (as usual ^_--)

Ooops, forgot to comment on a couple of pages (been kinda busy...)

6/8/2007: 'Getting Misplaced'

This was the last page I drew before taking that break, and it really does have 'imminent burnout' written all over it; check out the inking in the first panel, or the massive blooper with a marker pen on the third tree from the right in the second. Mike's pose in panel three might have come out well, but the inking all over the page is utterly rubbish. At the time, I was a little too tired and disillusioned to care...

7/8/2007: 'Useful things to notice...'

What a difference a break makes, huh? This was drawn on about the third day of my time on Skye, and there's a world of difference in quality; Tink's face in panels 1 and 2 is particularly good (I'm less keen on her man-chin in panel 4 >.>), and it actually looks like I care again (the evening before drawing this, of course, I'd just been writing the latter pages of the chapter, and let's just say that it was the excitement at the prospect of drawing them that spurred me onwards). The aeroplane is pretty sharp as well, considering that I drew it without any models or references, and the crash looks violent enough.

8/8/2007: '250 pages!'

I am *so* chuffed to be reaching 250 pages. Seriously. I was excited at 100 and at making it through the first year, because there I'd proved to myself that I could stay interested in something that long. 250 - particularly since this last break - not only is a more significant marker (after all, now 1,000 looks possible, and that means that the rest of the comic - which is probably headed for 2,500-3,000 pages - is beginning to seem less like a distant dream), but also signifies triumph over a year which has done its level best to leave me a wreck, never mind stop the comic.

But we're still going. Things already look good for 300, and after that there's 200 pages of plot which I can't wait to get to grips with. I owe thanks to a few people, though; mostly to Biev and Hogan, but also Cal, Foz, Chris, Naomi, Epsilon, Dom, Izzy, my band, my family and a bunch of other good people (someday I'll publish an official list and you'll all be on it ^_--).

In the mean time, I'm off to bed so that tomorrow I can get some serious stuff done without it killing me... damn real life T_T

9/08/2007: (I can't remember the durn page title... >.>)

About time Brian got fed up with Mike, no? And with a punch like that, could Mike be seriously injured?

By the way, yes, those are very bad renditions of Jack and Kate. What can I say? I suck at humans... (there's a pitifully accurate description of my social life if ever there was one *emotear*)

The good news is that I'm still drawing *in spite of* having purchased a Nintendo DS today... I'm currently playing through the original Advance Wars because FF3 failed to grab me (spreadsheet gaming, I tell you!) and I couldn't find Advance Wars DS anywhere :(

But I am completely hooked...

Anyway, a quick word about Zobbo; it's on hold for now while I earn my money for next year's uni time. As and when I feel up to returning to it (it takes a lot more out of me than PV - harder art style, more things to think about, more emotionally self-abusive etc.), it will start up again.

10/08/07: 'Inevitable Polar Bear gag'

No, Brian isn't a polar bear, he's just a white-furred bear. However, with a white-furred bear on a desert island in a Lost parody, ya gotta have a quick go at that polar bear bit in one of the early episodes (you know, the bit that had everybody - even those who don't watch it - talking about it).

11/08/07 'Reconciling again'

Is it just me, or are Mike and Brian having to reconcile a lot more often these days? (nudge nudge). Anyway, this page is weak writing-wise (bear with me, it's all set-up), but I'm really pleased with the art. It's just worked nicely for what I was trying to do. Brian's relieved/happy/uncertain/nervous face in panel 4 is a highlight.

Skipping yesterday's page 'cuz all that's worth saying about it can be said here...

13/08/07 - 'Sudden Health Impairment Provision'

Anyone get the joke from yesterday in time to see this joke coming? This was by far the hardest of the LOST-related jokes to get in, but when it did fall into place it was totally worth it ^_^

I'm dead chuffed with Mike's 'looking up face' in panel 1, as well; who knew that extreme neck tilts were just a matter of rubbing out the chin-line?

Bear with me, there's only two more pages of this chapter left. Then things get... interesting ^_--

Anyway, while I'm here...

15/08/2007 - 'Not thought this through'

So yeah, Skin may be adorable (*does happy little 'yay, he's back!' dance again*), but he's not especially bright, and he does have a tendency towards overreacting. As a result, he seems to have blamed Mike for what happened with Vika. Or something.

Skin's return was something I planned the moment I created the character - I enjoy him far too much to let him vanish forever at the end of volume 1 - so I kinda figured I'd just let it happen and not worry too much about how. I have to thank my parents (of all people) for sparking off the Lost idea, which gave me enough material (Lost makes such an easy target...) to turn my 'Skin comes back and causes trouble for the gang' chapter note into a sensible premise for a chapter.

And here we are.

Oh, news about Zobbo - I'm hoping to be able to start it up again next Thursday, to celebrate Prismatic Vodka's second birthday (yes, I know the first page went up at the end of September, 2005, and that's when I'll put on a proper show - again, hopefully - but I started work on it the preceding August, on the 23rd to be precise).

16/08/07 - 'One last LOST gag'

Yes, this does mean Skin is becoming a member of the main cast. I love him too much to leave him out.

And that's the end of the chapter, as well; good news, as most of you who've given me any feedback on this chapter have said they never actually watched much Lost (how did this show become so successful? No-one seems to have watched more than the first few episodes.... ^_--). Chapter 11, 'Signs', starts Monday, with the title page tomorrow, and will be something very different, but hopefully still entertaining in its way.
