I like the insight into Thingnie society that is being given. The fact that they're scared of the own ability of Hyper-Evolution is a nice human touch.

However, I do have a question. When Zworgue first showed up, he couldn't talk. Here, in this prologue, he can talk just fine. Did he De-Evolve are something?

Oh no, it's quite simple, the fact that we see what the Thingnies are saying doesn't mean they speak the way humans speak, they simply can comprehend themselves in other ways and it is graphically shown as if they were speaking.

D'oh! I should have thought of that. Yeah, that makes sense.

Strip of 8th December (anyone can post the new strips here).

So the lightflies have something in common with the Thingies? What are they? The souls of Thingies past, or?

Innnteresting...

It's possible that this may show some insight as to why Thingnie society seems to discourage hyper-evolution: Maybe in the process of hyper-evolution, a thingnie can 'evolve' into something that's no longer sentient?

And if the no longer sentient Thingnies regularly turn out to be threats to the rest of thingnie society...

Indeed, Stardrake, that is a good possibility. The bandits seemed to think The Old Man was evolving into a basilisk.

I was wondering why the little flying things looked a bit like Thingnies. Now we know it isn't coincidence. But what exactly is the connection? I'll list the possibilities:

1) As Stardrake said, Evolved Thingnies. Personally, I don't buy it. They Evolve to gain advantages in various situations. I really don't see how becoming a permanent fly is an advantage.

2) Forced Evolution. Other Thingnies forced them to come Light Flies somehow. This would most likely be as a form of punishment, maybe for the crime of being to evolved. It prevent them from becoming something dangerous.

3) As Hogan said, the Souls of dead Thingnies. Possible, as many beliefs hold that the departed stay to guide the living.

Anyone have any comments or more suggestions?

I would, but it would reveal the punch.

So it appears that it was option one. Interesting.

On a side note, how old is their world? The Thingnies are considered the Ancient Ancestors by the Humans & the Easterling. Yet there is a species EVEN older still. And is there an even OLDER species, etc, etc? Exactly how far back does it go? And will we ever learn about these species?

Some hints have been left here and there about this before.

He who watches, on the Tagboard, has a point... who ARE the Ancients? We know that the Thingies, according to Deception's boasts, was the chosen people of the Thingies, but who choose the Thingies?

As He who watches I too think the idea of the Ancients being Humans indeed has merits, creating the Thingies to populate the world by allowing them to evolve into different beings.

The question is now... what happened to the Ancient, and what kind of the world are the Thingies trying to repopulate?

Poor God, he had to do all the world himself, the Ancients just create the Thingies and then take an extended leave... :P

I wouldn't put too much credit in what Deception said about Dragon's being the true descendants of the Thingnies. Dragons, like humans, seem to have no Thingnie characteristics, same as humans. However, apart from that, I pretty much agree with your theory.

However, as to what's the nature of the world back in the days of the Ancients. Well, let's look at the facts. The Thingnies are subterranean & the surface world is considered forbidden. To me that implies that the surface world had been devastated by some cataclysm. If the event was serious enough, all life, or close too it, could have been wiped out. Therefore, the Ancients designed the Thingnies too repopulate their world. Then, they either died, left or when into hiding.

Anyone else have anything too add?

Actually, I don't think he directly said they were descendants of the Thingies (they also, from what we have seen, lack the telltale markings), he more like said they were the "Chosen People" of the Thingies, indicating that they might be the race the Thingies wanted to gain supremity over the world of tomorrow, perhaps they were the race that originally survived the apocalypse where the Ancients didn't? (or in case the Ancients were Humans, didn't come back until the Dragons were established, indicating the divided world between Humans and Easterlings from Dr. Catastrophe's backstory).

Again, it all depends on how much was bragging on Deceptions part, and how much was recorded fact...

Just how much can you trust Deception's word?

That is true. There is still so many unanswered questions. Just the way I like it! :D

Personally, I wouldn't as far as I can help it. He's called Deception for a reason.

Which brings up a question... Just how technologically advanced are the humans of the culture Catastrophe came from?

Draconic pride aside, if they're at the level where they can travel through space, you wouldn't expect dragons to be able to get them into a stalemate (unless there's a reason why they're holding back from deploying the nukes...). So if humanity didn't evolve there independantly, then they'd presumably either have got here by magic instead, or they've lost the technology they used to get there.
